Point Park University’s Guard Israel Strickland comes to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with a mature mindset. Strickland now junior is wise before her years to say the least. Coming from Clarion University located in Clarion, Pennsylvania has helped her arrive on campus understanding what it takes to become successful at this level.

Previous stops have helped pave a way for her to be a successful guard for the pioneers. During a second consecutive pandemic season this is without a doubt needed. For two straight seasons Men’s and Women’s basketball teams have dealt with postponements and cancellations. On top of that covid cases, vaccinations, and test are still a point of emphasis.

Although not being from the state of Pennsylvania this is the second team in the state that has believed in her abilities, work ethic, and winners intangibles that she has. A key reason is because she comes from the state of Ohio where Women’s High School Basketball is taken serious especially in the capital Columbus, Ohio. Central Ohio has some of the best Women’s basketball coaches and players. They really prepare student-athletes to make that jump to the next level,

Strickland was able to get great experience for 4 years at Bishop Hartley High School. When asked about her time there she acknowledged the importance of sports and academics. Junior Guard said “Great education, they cared a lot about it and basketball” In her time there she was a key contributor on Hawks powerhouse Women’s team that has had successful tournament runs. Clarion University also had an impact on her. When asked about her experience she said “It was very, very, humbling”. The Junior Guard would also discuss the impact it has on your ego. “You have to check your”. When you come from a powerhouse program like Hartley it can be hard to understand that but for her she’s already gotten the message.

Strickland is a we not me type of teammate. When talking about being an upperclassman with some of her other teammates she points out the importance of togetherness. Junior guard said “We’re a very close team and it starts with our best player”

Basketball is important to not only her but her family. When asked about her biggest influence she points to her dad. “He just game up here to see me”. The winners intangibles come from him clearly and so is her education mindset. Strickland is a Political Science Major at the University. Point Part also offers some very interesting food options. When asked about the most interesting thing she’s had the Guard said “Turkey Burgers”. While the city of Philadelphia is known for their cheesesteaks, it seems Pittsburgh is giving them a run for their money with the burgers.

Off the hardwood she loves to read books. When asked about the best one to read Strickland said “All about love” and the best TV show right now is “Abbott Elementary”. The guard has a hall of fame list of things to watch such as the nanny, family matters, and a number of classic shows. Point Park University has found a great Guard and she’s just getting started!
